Creating Multicultural Worlds

Children deserve to see themselves — and the richness of the world — reflected in the books they read. That’s why diversity is at the heart of the Pet Rescue Series.

In Juneau’s Journey, the rescuers, community members, and settings are intentionally representative of the multicultural world children live in. Diversity isn’t an “add-on” — it’s reality, and it’s always worth celebrating.

When children see characters who share their culture, language, or experiences, they feel seen and heard. When they meet characters different from themselves, they expand their understanding of the world. Both experiences are invaluable.

As an educator, I’ve seen how stories can break down barriers. A shared love for a fictional dog can connect children from vastly different backgrounds. That’s the magic of inclusive storytelling — it builds bridges where none existed before.

Representation in children’s books isn’t just about fairness; it’s about preparing kids to thrive in a diverse world. And in the Pet Rescue Series, that diversity is as natural as the wag of Juneau’s tail.
